Get crash reporter from cydia and see if any unknown programs are crashing in root.

I don't think android is really "open source" anyways. If a virus/*ware had to do with the openness of software Linux would be done for. As we all know this is not the case, Linux has been "safer" than windows for ages. As for the question asked virus not likely, spyware/malware maybe. Look at pandora, locationgate (or whatever you wanna call it) I'd consider that as spyware and you probably would too if it was on a windows machine.

But i dont and we are talking phones. First off with android it is open source there are some markets that are completely open and not regulated it. Plus there is rooting (aka android jailbreak) which lets you side load apps and tweaks. At least with cydia it is some what regulated

Sorry I was wrong you can get the source for android. Never had a need to look not a fan after playing with a few different ones. I have rooted a few evos for friends. Essentially aren't we rooting the iOS with the jailbreak? Because without root access there would be no jailbreak. As for side loading I have no idea about that but wouldn't that essentially be mobilesubtrate?

Technically the same thing. And yeah I guess mobilesubstracte does the same thing in a sense. My understanding of it is that it patches the kernnal on top of the jb so nothing else gets in. You can argue that by saying " well what about when you ssh" but the first s stands for secure and it's something you can only use if you are on wifi and no the ip address. With that being said as long as you aren't using public wifi with a jailbroken phone and there isn't a creeper around you should be good

Android and iOS is like comparing a high flying eagle to a poor defenseless mouse. iOS is way more secure. Cydia doesn't allow all of these apps that can essentially make your phone defenseless. With an iDevice you are safer. Android devices are not safe. I have the Verizon iPhone 4 in my hand and in my other hand I have a galaxy s phone. Galaxy s phone is rooted and right now is more prone to viruses than ever. The iPhone however is not.

What is this based on? Hearsay just like everything else. Everything I'm reading has more to do with rootkits than actual viruses. I'm not saying I'm right and your wrong, android and iOS are like cousins. (think Linux and unix). As for cydia not allowing such things is crazy, you won't see anything like this on community sources but when your using unsupported sources anything is possible. Like cowboy said I believe it has more to do with unregulated markets than actual os security. now before you say just look at the apps pulled by google, those had root injection (privilege escalation ie root kit) which gave the program root and allowed services to be started/ran with root access opening a backdoor. Which could easily be done with unjailbroke/jailbroke iOS with a default root password. It just hasn't yet on a widespread level.

I hate to disagree with the experts .. so I won't (hahaha).
However ....... installing unknown programs from unknown sources and repositories is like an 'Open Door' to full root access. Anything is possible after that. Solution: Don't do it !!
