Is your email set to push or fetch and how often?

Use push and fetch, fetch every 15min.
IOS 4 claims it has multi-tasking but apps will actually go into hibernation when not in use so this causes delays when retrieving information in real-time so you may not get an email exactly when it is sent unless you constantly keep apps and your connection active; fetching every 15min is about all we can do :/

It's only set to push, I don't want to put it on every 15 mins because I have read about battery problems.

Here is what I do.
I use IM+ (yes the paid AppStore version). I log into my mail (or yahoo, google, hotmail, or ) account with IM+. Set the preferences with that account (hotmail, gmail, etc) to send a push message with every mail received). Works like a charm
Push works whether phone is on, off, sleep or deep sleep. Never need to check mail until a push message is received.
The paid version allows multiple accounts to be 'monitored' in multiple ways.
BTW: There are other paid instant messenger apps which do the same thing.
Update: I forgot to mention the primary function of IM+, instant messenger client. It's not bad at that either
although I use it mostly for email push.

So far the battery has been ok, but I really don't want to test this by doing things lots of other people have said eats the battery. All I really want to do is take advantage if the push notifications, after all the main point of push is to save battery isnt it? I will try out IM+ and post back with my findings. Also I am having the same trouble with my twitter app, I would like to receive push notifications each time someone I am following tweets, I dint even know if that's possible with that app (the official twitter app free from iTunes).

If your concerned about your battery so much they do have cases with built-in backup batteries so it extends your battery life xD
I was about to get one but opted for a case that would keep my fragile, glass IP4 safe :/

Well the battery life itself is ok, but through experience and read posts I noticed that there are apps and settings that do reduce the battery life ie winterboard (not in all cases) and the 15 min email fetch thing. Anyways now when I receive an email I get an alert straight away from IM+ so job done. Thanks to all who helped, especially Mes.

Hmm if IM+ really does keep connections open a lot more that would drain your battery faster but for me I don't care I been looking for something like that.
Could you test something out for me?
Leave your phone alone for about 15min and allow everything to go into hibernation then send yourself an email and see if it wakes.
Thx
