iPhone 4 locked or just activated?
Hi, I had 3 iPhone 4's, 3 different carriers (Canada). All three had to be replaced at the Apple store, I only had my Telus sim. The Genius activated (just past the emergency screen) all 3 with the Telus sim. I thought they would all be locked to Telus, and I asked him that, he said no. If that's true, I have 3 factory unlocked iPhones that will lock once a valid sim is left in. I've never heard if that. Anyone know for sure?

I have heard something like that regarding Canadians iPhones. Some of them are unlocked until first activation. Bit strange IMO.

I guess I need the terminology defined. Activation is when the iPhone connects to the tower and is ready to make a call, or when you connect it to iTunes while on the emergency screen?

When you connect to iTunes to get past the emergency call screen.

That's what I thought, I can't see how they can't be locked.

I've had 3 iPhones replaced at sqaure one applestore in Mississauga Ontario, Canada. A Bell, Rogers & Fido. Wtvr u bring in for replacement, is what u leave with. U could try to get away with putting the sim card u want in the iPhone ur taking in & lie to them. If u tell them what carrier or if it's unlocked, you'll get a no hassle exact replacemant.

Not sure what you were trying to say here (I might be taking it the wrong way as my Hockey Team is about to be eliminated from the NHL Playoffs), as it doesn't seem to have anything to do with my earlier question. I never tried to lie about the carriers, I wanted the proper ones. And I've replaced over 10 iPhones at the Apple store, and it was the first time they activated without the proper carrier's sim. That was why I was confused and posted my initial post.
Anyway, I just got home where I had a micro Rogers sim. I checked the carrier in About in the iphone that was supposed to be locked to Rogers, it said Telus. I erased the iphone to get it back to the emergency screen. Popped in the Rogers sim and it activated it, saying Rogers now in the About. Erased again, tried to activate with the Telus sim, no go. Popped in Rogers, it activated. I don't have a Fido sim to check the 3rd iphone, but I assume the same results. So I guess bottom line is, they gave me the correct phones for the carrier, but it seemed that maybe (for the first time only) they can be activated using any sim. Guess I gotta trust the Genius, as he was right.

I'm not trying to say u lied, I'm saying u can try to get away with saying they r all Telus & they might replace them & activate them as Telus. Whenever I get replacements from Applestore in square one, they give me a locked iPhone exactly the same carrier I brought in that's all.

Lol, NHL playoffs are very distracting! Again just to clarify, I'm not calling anyone a liar. In fact I got busted trying to lie to applestore myself, LOL! I had a Fido iPhone being replaced under warranty, so I put my Bell sim in it & told them it was a Bell iPhone. Thinking they would just pop my valid Bell sim that I had in the Fido iPhone I was returning (saying it was Bell iPhone not Fido) & I could get a new iPhone on Bell. They busted me & gave me a Fido iPhone & I had a Fido sim card to activate the new one & I said "ooops I'm sorry! Thanks for noticing!"
Fail, busted!!! LMFAO, it was worth a try.
