Default Why exactly is it NOT recommended to restore from a backup after each jailbreak?

As far as when an update is pushed out an you gotta wipe your phone clean an rejailbreak once an update comes out, why is it recommended to not restore from your last backup? Or 'set up as new', then restore from backup.

Because it could carry over previous jailbreak data that could cause conflicts. Usually doing so when the primary reason to restore and rejailbreak is not due to experiencing issues with the device is ok, but if you're restoring because your device is acting up then it should be avoided as the problem will likely be carried over.

@ i.Annie - So then basically if you've never had any real problems with your phone it'd be perfectly fine to restore from a backup? Because that's what I've always done.

@ Bravo - I've never had any problems either. However, I've always kinda felt like my battery life is weak when I hear about people using their iPhones like no other and at the end of the day they've only used up maybe 50% of their battery life. I can text and literally watch my percentages go down over the span of minutes. I'll go from 100% to 10% at the end of the day just by texting, checking my mail a few times (all push bs is off), and check a few websites. I've seen it go down 15-20% in a half hour. Maybe it's just due to the sh-tty reception I get here? I dunno. But I can't really think of any type of bunk left in a backup while the phone was jailbroken that affects & stresses your batter - can you?

You can delete all the prefs files but I doubt it would help.

I always set up as new just bc I like to clear out my phone. I never usually restore unless a major update is released, then I'd restore/upgrade and rejailbreak. By that time I'd have like a million photos so I'd move some to my external hard drive and keep some (usually less than 10 or 20) on my phone.

I have restored from back up before and never had a problem either, it's just my preference to have a clean slate whenever I restore.

As for the battery usage, I can usually go 2-3 straight hours of phone usage (not tethering, it's much less if I tether) and have 40% left. I can go the whole day with moderate usage and have 10% by the end of the day. I have an iPhone 4. I don't know if that's "normal" but considering I always set up as new I dont think much of any contributing factors that could cause major drain.

I can say though that recently I installed lockinfo again (had it, haven't used it for months) and in these two days it eats my battery. Seriously 15 minutes later with it installed I go from 100% to 85%. maybe it's just me I don't know, but I figure the drain could also be due to what you install in Cydia. Dreamboard themes also drain my battery a bit but not too bad, not as bad as lockinfo does. So maybe check out what you've got installed, I don't really think it is due to you restoring from backup.

I agree that its better to have a clean slate but to be honest, I have never done it.

I always do it with my phone and iPad but now with the wife's iPhone I don't because she has all her settings just right. I don't mind going through all the settings again myself.

That's actually why I don't like setting things up as a new phone, lol, because I lose all of my pictures. It's nice to just look back on some memories on your phone randomly. Last update I attempted to start fresh and just drag my camera roll & notes out, update/rejailbreak, drag 'em back in - just to find out your camera roll can't be dragged back in (the thumbnails get all messed up, there's absolutely no work-a-round to get get it to work properly). So I said screw it an just restored from a backup. Now that an updated jailbreak came out for 4.3.1 I started out fresh, and just dragged my camera roll into a pictures folder that I can sync through iTunes, it takes FOREVER for it to 'import photos' though, and I know that's going to get quite annoying.

Your battery life I guess sounds similar to mine. And the only things I literally install through cydia is Winterboard & SBSettings, that's it. I really only jailbreak to give my phone a good look an that's it.

sometimes with new FW updates some of the file system moves around or is renamed. its like trying to restore anISO backup onto a completely different OS. things are bound to clash.

    well with windows anyways.

i always do a fresh install of everything unless there is something i forgot to backup before. even then after i retrieve my file, i'll wipe the phone again for a fresh start.
60% of the time, it works every time.

If that was the case, though, then that would apply to everybody that's unjailbroken every time there's an update too. I've never ran into anything in the phone not working properly because of an update an restoring from a backup, just my weak battery but I really don't think it has anything to do with the the backup/jailbreak. I'm beginning to think it's the bad reception I get around here, phone is just stressing to keep reception or something of that sort.
