3GS Stuck in restore mode.

Firstly, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post..

So I bought a 3GS off eBay, the phone was working, but with no signal, becuase I think the sim inside wasnt activated, the guy on eBay has been pretty helpful, so I believe the faults he listed were correct (Battery only lasts about 4 hours and the camera doesnt work).

So I plugged the phone into my PC with my sim card fitted and updated it, it got right to the end and the update failed with the error 1015, so I googled it, found many a forums and many answers, but none seem to have resolved my issue.. I've changed the USB cable, plugged it into a different slot, updated itunes etc. (All the Apple suggestions) I havent yet tried another iPhone but I will check tonight that I can update my current iPhone tonight, this will remove my Pc, cable, itunes etc from the picture and limit the problem to the iPhone itself.

I then started on the forum solutions I'd found.. So I tried restoring it in DFU mode, only managed to get it into DFU mode once but this still didnt work.. I also tried to do it with redsn0w, this started loading, I got the little picture of the hardrive then this also failed.

The guy is willing to give me a refund and the faults I've found aren't those that were stated, But I want a 3GS!!!! So am I completely screwed or is there a way to fix this that I haven't discovered yet?

I also have no idea what version of software it was running before it failed to update.. Does this matter?
