iPhone 3GS Bricked. "device not eligible"
ok, couldnt find anything relevant so here goes
-started with a fresh 4.2.1
-used redsn0w b5 to jailbreak it, and install ipad baseband
-no sim in it, so conected to wi-fi, opened cydia
-as cydia is initialing file system phone freezes
-hard reset phone after a few min
now it stays stuck on the boot screen.
i downloaded 4.2.1 and am trying to restore to that and it says couldnt restore, device not eligible for requested build.
anyone have any ideas?

In order to restore firmware 4.2.1, you need to have previously saved your SHSH blobs for 4.2.1 in Cydia or by using TinyUmbrella. Why were you able to restore 4.2.1 earlier? My educated guess is that Apple was still signing iOS 4.2.1. Just recently, Apple stopped signing 4.2.1, which is why you can not restore it now and why you receive "device not eligible for requested build".
If you did save your SHSH blob for 4.2.1, then first run TinyUmbrella and click the "Save SHSH" button. This will retrieve all your saved SHSH blobs from Cydia to your computer. Once this is done, click "Start TTS Server" and then restore your iOS 4.2.1 firmware in iTunes.
Note: You will receive a 1015 error because your baseband doesn't match your firmware. Put your iPhone into DFU mode and use TinyUmbrella and click "Fix Recovery".

Finally got 4.2.1 on there, iTunes error 1015. Used tiny umbrella to fix recovery. And then the phone attempts to run greenpois0n ?!? It doesn't find the loader files so it doesn't move from the greenpois0n initialized screen. So I started greenpois0n on the comp so it would dl the loader files. And fixed the recovery again through tiny umbrella and it initialized greenpois0n again and ran it. It got stuck along the way and stayed in verbose.
Finally tried a 4.3 restore and got the same 1015 error.. I thought 4.3 would flash over the iPad baseband?

Yea I had. It was my understanding that 4.3 would flash a newer baseband.
Guess not.
So is there a fix I missed?

Apple specifically didn't update the baseband to 6.XX (which would have been the normal progression) and instead went with 5.16 so as to screw over the people who used it to unlock. No surprise there.
Had you saved your files though, you could use pwnage to restore to 4.2.1. One click in Cydia woulda saved you some serious hassles right now. So always make sure you save your files from now on

Well see that's part of the problem. The phone froze on me before Cydia even finished initializing file system. When I reset the phone it was stuck on the boot screen in loop. And I forgot to save my shsh in tiny. It's definitely been a learning experience though.
Does tiny umbrella hold a cache or something of shsh files? I had my files on there but forgot to save. That's how I got 4.2.1 back on there the first time
Or... Can I save my shsh blobs, from my personal phone running 4.2.1 and use them for this other one?Last edited by noturtypicalone; 03-15-2011 at 04:22 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I never saved them. Phone crashed before Cydia even initialized. And I didn't save them in TU

I am with you and I believe that they will abandon the 6.xx, they may never go over 5.xx. With the way that the system will not change the baseband unless it is a higher version now I am glad that I didn't flash that baseband.
To the OP the easiest thing for you would be to get a pwned ipsw to keep on your PC of 4.3 and make sure to back up your shsh's. This way you always have a way to revert.
