iphone no longer auto-correcting "welll" to "we'll" etc

My phone is no longer auto-correcting words like "weree" and "welll" to the abbreviations (ie: we're and we'll).
It used to. Now it does not. Is there a way to fix this? I tried pulling out the dynamic-text.dat file. But it is just a list of words. Is there a way to edit the auto-correct function? or is it in dynamic-text.dat and I just don't know how to do it?

edit: Resetting the keyboard dictionary (settings>general>reset) worked. But a more elegant solution (one where I don't lose my history) would be much appreciated.
