Default Help on Updating iPhone 3G---Which Update Firmware to Use?

Hello. I have not been current on the recent developments so I apologize in advance for my question(s).

I have an iPhone 3G on 3.1.3 firmware with 05.12.01 baseband and my service is with TMobile. I am hoping to update my firmware but am afraid that since I have not really kept up to date with the recent events, that I might not know the implications involved (i.e. will updating update my baseband to one that cannot be unlocked, etc).

I would greatly appreciate it if anybody could provide insight as to what is the latest update I can update my 3G to that will still allow me to unlock it --- since I'm on TMobile.

Also- if you could recommend what would be the best version to update to as I recall reading back when iOS4 just got released that it was not really the best for a 3G.

I don't really need a step by step on how to update but rather advise as to what would be the best version I can update to for my 3G that does not really lose any functionality.

    Thank you in advanced.

You can use pwnage tool to make a custom 4.2.1 firmware to restore to so that your baseband is preserved, but honestly 3.1.3 is the best firmware for iPhone 3G. 4.0 and up will slow it down a bit.

Thank you so much. Based on that, I think I'll stay on my current firmware then. Have a great day.
