If you have an iphone, you have to have the data plan.

Are you talking about the APN?

Yes phone companies use the IMEI to determine which type of phone you are using.
Changing the IMEI can make it look like you are using a different phone to the phone company.
Changing the IMEI number is illegal (I believe) in North America. So by changing the IMEI number you risk getting yourself in heaps of trouble. Good luck.HOP

If you paid for the phone subsidized, then you don't own the phone until your contract is up. Part of that contract is that you have to have a data plan which helps pay for the cost to subsidized the phone.

You cannot change the IMEI on a iPhone 4. ZiPhone used to be able to do it on the first gen iPhone way back in the day but will do nothing on iphone 4. Oh, and I do believe it is illegal to do anyway like defmute said.

I agree it is unfair that they force you into having data. Especially with a no contract iPhone.

You should have bought your father an iPod Touch. The phone sucks without a dataplan. And...you have no case as AT&T clearly states that you have to have a data plan. They didn't hide this fact. You didn't do any research.
