I am currently using iOS 4.2.1 (8C148) and iTunes 10.1.2.17 on a WinXP 32-bit computer with more then sufficient resources for iPhone's minimum requirement.
Whenever I connect my iPhone to the USB cable I get the usual message from the Scanner and Camera Wizard. It shows the name of my iPhone(Pinnacle's Mobile) on the camera wizard window.
However upon clicking cancel to get back to iTunes, what usually happens is that, a Device tab will appear when I connect the iPhone to iTunes, with the name of my iPhone(Pinnacle's Mobile) below that Device tab. However, I recently cannot see my iPhone on the left hand column, below STORE and PLAYLIST.
I've tried uninstalling iTunes a number of times with the steps given in Apple's site on how to uninstall iTunes.
I've also tried the steps suggested in Unable to Backup iPhone to iTunes
apart from editing the hosts file, because I can't even see my iPhone in iTunes.
Any suggesting will be tried and I do thank you in advance for all the advices and suggestions given.
I've had the same issue numerous times and instead of messing with iTunes I've had to restore my phone which if your phone will not pick up with itunes you'll have to plug in your phone with iTunes open and put your phone into DFU mode. When your phone is in DFU mode iTunes will pop up with a message telling you that iTunes has detected a phone in restore mode or something along those lines. Btw did u JB with greenpois0n RC5 on 4.2.1? If so do you have open ssh on your iPhone or iFile? if so do you have ifunbox/iPhone browser installed on your computer? It may be able to get fixed through there. You can also try to install fswipecache from Cydia and just hit that icon and see if that works, before restoring. It's worth a try.

I've tried the restore method as well. The thing is, iTunes will detect the phone and proceed with the restore after my acknowledgement and after the restore I'll see my mobile on the left hand tab. But after I disconnect the iPhone then reconnect later, the iPhone will not appear on the left side tab .
I did JB with limera1n on OS4.2.1 before. But due to this problem I decided to revert back to the original OS in case I have a genuine problem.
Hmm...I'll ask around, but for now do you have a friend or anybody close that has iTunes? If you do see if you have the same problem on their PC as well that way we canknow if it's your pc or your iPhone (maybe you've already done this....)???
Hi all, after exhuastive testing and loaning a set from a friend to test it out, I realise it's my own PC giving me issues, however, I have yet to deduct what the issue is with the iPhone 4, iTunes and my computer. Anyone has any suggestions?
Also to add on, and because I've been unable to connect to iTunes, I've been unable to JB. However when I attempted on a friend's set, limera1n doesn't work for me. Any suugestions on this as well or should I post this on the JB section of the forum? Thanks in advance!

First off, my opinion, don't use Limera1n. In my experience its very unstable. My phone always had issues with it. It would always crash to the bootlogo and finally it crashed to bootlogo and would just continuously repeat the bootlogo so that's when I was on 4.1 and just restored to 4.1 and JB with greenpois0n which I've NEVER had an issue with. Now I'm on 4.2.1 Greenpois0n which again is amazing and stable. When u get a computer that works I will be more than happy to teamview and do GP for you or just run u through it. A lot of people say GP won't work but that's cuz they make the minor mistake of not performing the DFU while the phone is turned off. Here's how you do it.
•plug in your phone to pc via the USB. (let iTunes fully startup and then cancel all sync process)
•startup the greenpois0n exe (this should automatically close iTunes but if not make sure iTunes is closed, not minimized).
•turnoff the device (while plugged in to pc via USB)
•then do your DFU process
•once GP exe highlights the Jailbreak button, press it.
Note: IF U DO NOT DO DFU FROM SHUTDOWN GP WILL NOT WORK AND YOU'LL GET THE "error/quit/try again" message. Just a hint because I know a ton of people say it won't work but when they do it this way it works perfectly.
Hi PoEtikly, I uninstalled iTunes from iTunesSetup.exe and managed to get the iPhone detected again, I just tried limera1n before your post and it didn't work, coz after I get the window popup from limera1n saying the exploit is done, I get the picture on my iPhone that says to connect my iPhone to iTunes, can't power off or anything. Trying to get the iPhone resotred on iTunes now coz I keep getting error 21 in iTunes.
Am gonna try the GP JB after the iPhone restore *crosses fingers* and let you know in a couple of minutes

Ok, got it recovered, trying GP JB now as we speak

Ok let me know but if u can't restore and u get that error message it's because of a host file which will need to be edited. It doesn't allow iTunes out to access a server or something so I'll look for it after I find out if u r able to restore and def use greenpois0n rc5 (I think, or just install greenpois0n for iPhone 4 4.2.1 if that's what you're on)

I'm glad I could help. add me on msn though for any future issues u may have. when u get cydia installed and your sources make sure the first thing u download is open ssh, iFile (if you don't want to pay add the sinful iPhone repo and xsellize) cuz those will save your *** and if something goes wrong u won't have to restore. I can fix u up
hi, i am new to the forum and i am facing the same problem.
I believe its my itunes that has the problem as my iphone 4 can be detected by other computers be it MAC or Windows.
currently running on the iOS4.3.1 and my itunes is the latest version 10.2.1.
any idea how to get the itunes detect the phone?
Methods tried;
Reinstalling Itunes
Rebooting Iphone
Manually delete Apple/itunes related files after uninstalling Itunes
install older version of itunes
Got my Iphone replaced from Starhub.
any other suggestions?
currently my iphone is not JB.
and the problem started when i was upgrading the software via itunes. Iphone freezed.
Hey just so u know I reached cheekin and he is still having the issue and hasn't found a fix for it. He's reinstalled and repaired windows as well and still has the issue which makes me believe it's not an issue with iTunes that after that happens there is a core file in the iPhone but I'm not sure y it would still be effected after a complete restore...if u find a solution for this please post here so we can all know. And I'll take a look around and ask a few people that I know.
