iPhone screwed?

I'm trying to upgrade a friends iPhone from 3.1 to 4.2 but the process froze half way thro.now I can't restore or kick out of recovery mode!! Any thoughts?

Same thing happened to me but I used Rec boot to kick it out of DFU. I still can't get the update to 4.2 to run completely though. Any help is appreciated!

I tried reboot and tiny but neither of them would kick out of recovery.I had to uninstall all iTunes media fromy laptop and reinstall twice.I also tried the link cable in another USB socket.I know that seems a weird thing to do but I read it helps online somewhere.let me know how you get on.
