i have an 3gs with an upgrade from att.wife has an old samsung with no upgrade.can i use the upgrade and get her a 3gs and switch the sims? also need to know how to do the sim switch

Yes, I believe you can do that, but as soon as you put your wife's SIM Card into the new iPhone she will be forced to take the AT&T data plan.
