Default Constant Reboot, with a twist!

    Hi,

Sorry to be adding to the numerous constant reboot threads, but the search isn't helping me.

I have an iPhone 3G. Jailbroken months ago with BlackRa1n, and working fine since.
Version should show up on the side ----->

My power button does not work at all, so no forced reboots, no DFU.....
The phone went into constant reboot today. I don't know why. I wasn't doing anything with it.
I have less than 10 Cydia apps. Not overloaded.

So, I can't hard reboot. iTunes doesn't recognise it. DFU.exe won't recognise it. Same with BlackRa1n. And DiskAid.
iReb helps put it in DFU using buttons, so no use.
Can't find a current exe for Fr0zenRa1n, but assume it's the same.

Any suggestions? Apart from, throw it out the window.

Without a home button it is very tricky. Are you able to put it in recovery with any of those tools?

I would suggest getting the power button fixed....you can get the ribbon with the power switch/mute switch and headphone jack for $10-15...Shouldn't take someone who's changed it before longer than 45mins AT MOST...go from there....maybe theres a short/bad ribbon causing it to reboot?

I had a "burn" spot in my #3 ribbon (for the proximity sensor) and my phone wouldn't boot up...just hung at the apple logo until I unplugged/replaced the ribbon.

You hit it right on the money.
I'm sure that's what it is causing the reboots, you can always take it apart as well.

Where do I get the ribbon? Ho do I open up the phone?
The power button has been broken for over a year...
I haven't been able to put it in recovery, or do anything.
It doesn't seem to be taking charge very well either (wasn't an issue 2 days ago!) so will try a different cable if I can.

U didnt erase WB or anything weird did u? Ive heard of random reboots b/c of that. I think i actually did that myself once lmao. If ur dexterity and abilities (no offense) arent excellent, i wouldnt try to replace anything or open ur iphone for that matter.. Get a quote from a repair shop first. To be honest it may not even be worth fixing cuz they usually get u on the labour. Actually... I have a phone for parts.. Where u live?

    FIXED.

I found out today that you can put the phone in Restore mode by holding the home button and plugging it in to the computer. This only works when the phone is off. Or not rebooting. This meant run out of battery for me!

So this got me back to a point I could restore the phone. (I used a Redsn0w ipsw to restore.) Then Jailbroke with Blackra1n as I had before.

    Thanks all.
No idea what caused it unfortunately.

I thought your home button was broken? Or did I misread that?

Still trying to remember how I unlocked it last time. My Wifi doesn't work. (I know, I need a new phone!!) I need to either get my hands on a SIM card from the original network, or find a way to unlock with no WiFi and no Network!

Download the ultrasnow.deb and put it in cydias autoinstall folder.

Thanks. Blackra1n doesn't complete the Cydia install. So I need a network to do this it seems!
    Bit of a nightmare.
I might just get a SIM card from the original netork, and buy credit to get this done.

Ok hold on.. So u said u used a redsnow ipsw(?) and blackrain to jb.. What firmware r u on? Why didnt u just jb with redsnow?? U can jb with up to 4.0 i think for the unlock. Plus research (i'll help u when i have time) what redsnow version can do the hacktivate so u dont have to have original sim.. I just jb mine on 4.1 with redsnow 0.9.6b4 and it gave the option to hacktivate(dont quote me on that cuz im not at my computer lol) but lower FW's for sure.. And its untethered too. Wait, yeah up to 4.1 should be good cuz thats what cydia shows.. U do have ur shsh's saved rite?

    My versions are 3.1.2(7D11) Modem Firmware/Baseband 05.11.07

Since the phone was having such problems, it seemed the only resolution was to Restore it, but I didn't want to use the iTunes version in case this upgraded something, so the RedSn0w ipsw was a way I knew I could Restore and keep it at 3.1.2, which is the version needed to use Blackra1n.

With my power button not working, I'm not sure what other versions I can jailbreak from, as I don't know a way to enter DFU without it.

I do have an original SIM now, but it doesn't have cash on it be able to download. (Cydia and Unlock).

I have never saved any shsh's.

So, any JBs I can use without my power button? I'll see what I can find on this Redsn0w, and maybe DFU.exe

    Thanks.

Umm.. Didnt u say u fixed ur power button?? Well if u use the original ipsw(which i personally recommend) it will update the baseband. Do u have cydia now?? When u open it, at the top it should(hopefully) say shshs saved .."4.0-etc"
Anyways, i think u should download the 4.0 original ipsw and update thru itunes. Then use redsnow with the same original ipsw and jb ur phone. Hacktivate. Then install ultrasnow for the unlock. Use tiny umbrella to save shsh. Ive also been told that 3.1.3 is the better fw for iphone 3g. Personally i dont know cuz i went from 3.0 to 4.1. New fw is great

So I am all fixed now.
    Summary as follows:
Constant reboot: Put into recovery mode by holding home and connecting cable.
Restore through iTunes. (I used shift restore to a Redsn0w ipsw)
Jailbreak with Blackra1n. Power button not needed.
With Blackra1n, I installed Blacksn0w directly to unlock. I had an original network SIM to do this, as WiFi is broken.

    Thanks.
