Iphone 3g won't turn off

No matter how many times I hit the sleep wake button or hold it down, I cannot get the phone to turn off.

I was having problem with this when it was jailbroken, so I restored to 4.1 in hopes of re-jailbreaking.

Still no luck using the button.

Any work arounds? Ideas as to why the button does not work?

Sounds to me you have a bad switch for the power button probably just need to replace it .

I agree, it's most likely bad. But try this. Squeeze the top right corner near the power button down and press the power button. See if you get any result, you might want to play around with that area.
