Help, totally new to IPHONE modding

OK so I just got hands on an ATT 8 gig original (2g with the metal back) Iphone. It does not have a contract associated with it and I do have the original sim card for it. I am not sure what the current firmware is. Currently when I power it up it up it goes into what I am going to call Emergency call mode. I would like to use it as an IPOD touch type device on my WIFI network at home. I have no plan to add voice or data plan. The person who gave it to said the battery was starting to go but as of right now it seems to be OK. If I can I would like to have both IOS and andriod on it, the problem is I do not even know where to start. I currently also have my IPOD classic 80GB hooked up to my ITUNEs and don't want to mess that up either. Any and all help is appreciated, even just a point in the right direction.

I dont know much about the android thing but you can jailbreak and activate with redsnow 0.9.4 if you are on 3.1.3.
