Default Remove / Replace "No Service" MSG - iPhone 3G

Good morning, I am passing an old 2nd generation phone onto a friend. The phone will not be used for making calls. The phone has a unactivated SIM inside it. I would like to remove / replace the "No Service" in the upper left. I have tried fakecarrier and makeitmine with no luck.

    2nd generation device running 4.2.1 JB w/ RedSn0w.

I understand these apps write this specfic data to the SIM. I have tried multiple deactivated SIM's w/ no luck.

Please help and thanks in advance.

The short answer would be yes, in order for me to have tried multple deactivated and unactivated sims at some point the sim would of had to be removed.

With the sim removed I now have "No Sim" as my new header. I tried both fakecarrier and makeitmine with no luck. I am not certain how either of these would work, I believe they write their data to the sim card.

No luck, thanks for the suggestions. I think the carrier edit software makes changes to the carrier info on the sim. The "No Service" and "No Sim" msgs have to be a part of the iOS. Its going to require a different approach at least in my mind.

Use Winterboard? I've downloaded various carrier logos under the themes section in Cydia and activated them that way.
