theme problems on iphone 4

I have iphone 4 version 4.1
jailbroke using limera1n
can download themes from cydia and codethemed, but when I activate them in winterboard the whole theme doesnt work, sometimes background and the icons never change.
I make sure it is the only theme checked and at the top of winterboard theme list.
any ideas?
I would also love to know how to change the sms background, on previous iphone 3, i used desktop/sms background? but it crashed my iphone 4 when i download it from cydia.

Some things in winterboard still do not work right in iOS 4. Backgrounds are one of them. If you wanna use the background from the theme download ifile and go to /var/stash/themes/(whichever theme you want) and find the background image. Than hit edit in the top right hand corner and select said image. Hit the button directly to the right of the + in the bottom right. Voilą your background is now in the camera roll and can be applied using the standard method in iOS 4. As for SMS backgrounds I don't have an iPhone I just have an iPod touch so I do not know. Try downloading one from Cydia and seeing if you can modify it to make it work.

What theme are you trying to put on as it has to be for the iPhone 4, as the settings are different from the other phones.

so an iphone 4 theme will not work on a 3GS (unless its been ported) and vise versa.

Actually it may work, its simply not gaurenteed. Often it is worth it to try just to see what works, and themes are simple enough to modify that you can probably fix them with a few lines of code and iFile.

i tried Phineas and Ferb from cydia and the background works, but not icons,
then I tried a simple theme I made in codethemed, and the background and battery charge colors worked, but not the icons or the carrier logo
I also tried crystaldark from cydia, I found it under a article for best iphone 4 themes, so I thought it would work and it just gives a black background, with no icon changes.

do you know of a theme that definently works on iphone 4 version 4.1, then I could try it and see if it is winterboard or just my phone or settings?

in case anyone else has this problem, I figured out that the icons will work if you switch to summerboard setting on. I am slowing getting thru the 60+ pages on the forum "things you may not know" and it is helping!
I still have not figured out how to change sms background, desktop/sms backgrounder? makes my phone constantly go into safe mode.

Well i fun elite Pro HD on my iPhone 4 (4.1)jailbroken with limera1n and it works perfectly. But that a paid theme so not sure if you want to try that.

The problem with a lot of the theme's is the icons are named different for the iPhone 4 (like they are named @2x.png and not just .png)

Most of the new theme's dont use Summerboard, that is for old theme's

Honest i would try elite pro or one of the paid iPhone 4 themes for the sake of $3.oo and then at least you will know.

But you could always try to restore to 4.1 and re jailbreak, and i would set up as a new phone if you do that as that would eliminate a lot of problems that could carry over from backup
