How to play non-MP4 files on iphone 3G?

I downloaded oplayer 1.22 from APP STORE. I then added videos from itunes and tried to play them and the app kept crashing. I did a search on another forum and saw a thread where people recommended using oplayer 1.09 for iphone 3G, so I got that. When I installed that, the shared files section on itunes under apps did not show up, so I dragged and dropped the files into the "downloads" folder of ophone and tried to play them. The videos play but they lag so badly that they are unwatchable. Like the first 10 seconds are straight sound then the next 30 seconds are the video playing in super slow motion trying to catch up... What's going on here? What should I do to get videos to play on oplayer on my iphone 3G?
