Default New iphone 3gs. Dont want to mess things up. Few questions.

Ok I bought a Iphone 3gs on craigslist today. Before I get started unlocking and jailbreaking, I want to make sure I am doing things correctly.

I already saved the SHSH's on Tiny umberella. The phone is running 4.1 (8b117) model: MC135LL. 05.14.02.

Now the guy sold me the phone and it was jailbroken and he was using AT&T. I am looking to also unlock it and use it on a different carrier.

I also need to put all my apps, contacts, music, etc, on the phone as well.

What should be my steps with the phone? Should I restore the phone? If I do, can I still unlock it?

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Oops (a complete rewrite). Just noticed you have 5.14.x That changes everything.

iPad BB (6.16.x) upgrade is your only choice to unlock (at the moment).

Ok. If I have to do that, can I go ahead and restore before than?

Don't just blindly restore. That will automatically update your baseband (modem firmware) -- maybe to a never-unlockable state! Go to iClarified.Com Tutorial section and pick the jailbreak/unlock method and desired iOS firmware for your device. You will need SHSH blobs for that iOS version. Also look at the tutorials here on MMI and the Dev-Team blob for additional information. Do your reading/research BEFORE anything.

Ok. I know that I can unlock using the ipad baseband method. I was wondering if I can downgrade using tiny umberella and use an earlier firmware even though the current firmware on the phone is the most current from apple.

Can I downgrade if I have 4.1 (8B117) saved on TinyUmberella? Will I be able to jailbreak and unlock with that? Will that change the firmware from 05.15.04 to something earlier?

If you just saved the shsh blobs when you got the phone then you will only have them for 4.2.1 so no you can't downgrade and baseband can't downgrade either, it only goes up. Only choice you have, is the redsn0w with the ipad baseband.

I thought thats all you were supposed to do. I saved them before I restored. Wouldnt that allow me to downgrade?

If not, what did I do wrong?

Great. You can restore to any iOS listed. Not 4.2.1?

Ok, well I am on 4.2.1 with 05.15.04 firmware. Do I just use tiny umberella to downgrade?

Yes. Since Apple is only signing 4.2.1, Tiny Umbrella (select iOS version, start TSS server) provides the SHSH blob information when iTunes requests permission to load.

It doesn't matter. Why not stay at 4.2.1?

Ultimately you should check out your bootrom version. If you have the old boot, it would be untethered so staying on 4.2.1 won't hurt. If it is new boot, it will be tethered. If you think you don't want to deal with having to boot tethered (everytime you reboot or phone shuts off, you have to run redsn0w on it to access your phone again) then downgrading to 4.1 for an untethered jb is a good idea.

Ok. First off, thanks for helping me! Basically, the only thing I dont want to do is use the ipad baseband since I still have a warranty with apple.

Right now I am currently restoring using tiny umberella to 4.0 firmware. What are my next steps to jailbreak than unlock?

Just curious why you don't want to go to 4.1. It's improved since 4.0.x.

It really doesnt matter to me. However, I am on the .05.15.04 baseband right now. After I restore using 4.1, what steps should I take to jailbreaking and unlocking the phone?

You would run the TSS server in TinyUmbrella then shift+restore to stock 4.1. Get Redsn0w 0.9.6b6. Open it, browse to stock 4.1, then you'll be shown a list to select options. Select Cydia, iPad baseband, and if you'd like to disable/enable wallpaper and multitasking. Then follow the rest of the on-screen instructions. You should then be jb after redsn0w completes.

To unlock, go to Cydia and install ultrasn0w. Be aware, with the iPad baseband, you risk losing GPS function. If you absolutely can't wait for a possible new unlock which the release is currently undetermined, then the GPS loss is a risk you'll have to take. Otherwise, you might also notice a drastic battery drain.

To fix the battery drain, you'll want to go to Cydia and download SAM. I will follow up with a guide on how to use SAM in a minute.
