    Download tinyumbrella from here

    http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/

Hit 'kick out of recovery' and see if that works.

I don't believe it does, not when I used TU, a few months back.

When you "kick out of recovery" all that does is, well obviously kick it out of recovery, doesn't change the firmware at all. Just pretty much turns your device on if you like

Did you by any chance click "make my life easier" in Cydia before this happened? Your SHSH blobs for whatever firmware you had can maybe be restored... I did this and used TU as back up. You need to download the specific ipsw file for your firmware. If you have an iPhone 3GS on 4.1, download that ipsw file and save it. Open iTunes, connect your iPhone and put it in DFU mode. When iTunes detects the iPhone and prompts you to restore click OK. Before you click restore, hold down the shift key on your PC. If you have a MAC, this might be different from my Windows explanation. Hold shift and click restore. When a file browsing window opens, find that ipsw file and click it. If it stats to restore but eventually stops and says there was a 1015 error, then you need to use TU or RecBoot to kick it out of Recovery Mode. After that try jailbreaking it like you did before. This sounds weird, but it totally works for me. Restored my bricked iPhone 3GS iOS 4.1 that kept rebooting to the spinning wheel and Apple logo screen. Managed to do this and keep it on its 4.1 firmware and previous baseband while using an updated 4.2.1 iTunes 10.
