Issue upgrading to iOS 4.2.1 on non-jailbroken 3GS
I have a 3GS that was not jailbroken and when I tried to upgrade to iOS 4.2.1 it freezes in the middle of the upgrade and just doesn't do anything else. No errors, nothing.
iTunes says "Restoring iPhone software". I left it run all night last night and no error popped up.

Any advice on what I can do to get the upgrade to work?
Thanks!

Are you using the the latest iTunes ?
and you are clicking upgrade and not restore ?
You could download 4.2.1 firmwear from somewhere and do a Shift+Restore to see if that helps as it could be a connection error to Apple and seen as they are still signing 4.2.1 it would make no difference to how you do the restore.

I moved to another computer, did a fresh install of iTunes, re-downloaded the firmware and the upgrade worked on the first attempt. The different computer is running Vista 32-bit and the computer that is giving me a problem is 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Several different factors involved here so who knows what the ultimately made the difference (new iTunes install, OS problem, etc.).
I was using the latest version of iTunes and tried to upgrade by just clicking the Restore button and also holding Shift and selecting the firmware myself. I put the phone in DFU mode too and that didn't make a difference.Last edited by rrrodeybreaker; 12-20-2010 at 08:31 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I do have Wifi Sync installed on the Win 7 computer. That never dawned on me that it could cause a problem.
