Read this on another site that you can try...
For Mac OS X:
Step 1. Go to your “Applications” folder
Step 2. Go to your “Utilities” folder
Step 3. Launch “Terminal”
Step 4. Type “sudo nano /etc/hosts” (without quotes) and hit return
Step 5. Enter your password
Step 6. Use the down arrow key to find the “gs.apple.com” entries. Once the cursor is in front, make sure you comment out the line(s) by entering “#” (no quotes) in front of the text
Step 7. Save the file by pressing CONTROL+O on the keyboard
Step 8. Exit the nano editor by pressing CONTROL+X on the keyboard
Step 9. Restore your iDevice
For Windows
Step 1. Start –> Programs –> Accessories
Step 2. Run Notepad or WordPad
Step 3. Click “Open..” from File menu.
Step 4. Browse to Windows/System32/drivers/etc
Step 5. In “files of type:” select all documents
Step 6. Open “hosts”
Step 7. Delete all line that has “gs.apple.com” or something like that
Step 8. Hit Save
Step 9. Restore your device

It is probably on 4.2.1 so exiting recovery with TU will not work as TU's site has stated. You'll probably need to restore to 4.1 but you can only do so if you have the SHSHs for it. That is the easiest fix. But if you don't have SHSHs for 4.1, then try thetoothfairy's link. It looks promising, never tried it, but please let us know if it works.

i tried
thanks to both of you! I tried both suggetions. When I tried i.Annie's i got a different error code after downloading firmware 4.1 from iclarified. thetoothfairy, I tried yours and also went to the link you supplied, I was doing fine until the "control" commands. Control doesn't work, you have to use the "apple" key and the alpha commands "O" and "X" seem they should be "S" for save and "Q" for quit. Those are the normal shortcut keys. But again, thanks to you both for offering help.
anybody else? phone is still stuck in recovery! going to try and restore on another computer, maybe that will work?!

Well like I said, you'll need SHSHs to restore to 4.1. If you have them you'd have to run TinyUmbrella's TSS Server while restoring or else it will error out. So you can't just shift+restore to a 4.1 firmware without checking for your SHSHs and running the TSS Server

I had TSS Server running and no luck when I tried to load customer 4.1. But I just tried restore on another computer and it worked! Which I don't understand at all. I hope I don't run into this problem with my Mac at home in the future.

Another person said this worked and another person tried it and it worked for him/her as well on apples forums..
Apple - Support - Discussions - restore iphone 4 error 1013 and 1611 ...
On Mac:
* Open Finder
* Hold down COMMAND + SHIFT keys and press 'G'
* Enter "/private/etc/" in the field and press "Go"
* Find "hosts" file in the directory
* Drag the file to your desktop
* Open it in text editor
* Remove the line that has gs.apple.com entirely or put a # at the beginning of it to comment it out
* Save the file
* Drag it back to the /private/etc/ folder.
* You'd need to enter your username and password to authenticate the move
On Windows:
Locate the hosts file in one of the following directories:
Windows 95/98/Me c
windows\hosts
Windows NT/2000/XP Pro c
winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Windows XP, Vista, 7 c
windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Right click and click on "Open With..." and then click on "Notepad" on the list.
* Remove the line that has gs.apple.com completely and save the file.
This should work fine but you will lose all music, photos, videos and books :S
Not saying your wrong my dear but read this on the Apple forums and thought I would add it just incase someone had this happen...
Do not to use TinyUmbrella to kick out of restore. Using TinyUmbrella will add the "....gs.apple.com" line back into the Host file and you are back to error 1013, can't update the firmware.Last edited by thetoothfairy; 12-10-2010 at 12:41 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Yup thats the reason as Toothy (Do you mind Toothy?
) said. It is tiny umbrella messing with your hosts. For a successful 4.2.1 restore on iPhone 4 your hosts have to be pointed to Apple because of the Baseband SHSH. An easier method is just open tiny umbrella. Click on advanced, deselect the box that says "set hosts to cydia on exit" and then close tiny umbrella. you should then be able to restore no problem.
Obviously dont do this if your baseband is 1.59.00 and you need unlock as this will update your baseband to 3.10.01Last edited by Simon; 12-10-2010 at 12:52 PM.

error 1013 fixed and it works
i dont know how to send a thank you, but if i could i wouls give you 1 million thanks, my iphone is back.
i used the usbview to manually enter ecid in umbrella, then in advanced i unticked 3 boxes, "send to cydia", "overwrite shsh", and "recognise my device".
"make life easier" my ***, it said it was irreversible, well its back ok with apple fw 4.2 but i will have to live with that.
thanks again x98car your beautiful
i tried your way, but a soon as u run umbrella it overwrites the hosts again, so i would stick with x98car's way, but thanks for the effort.Last edited by my daddy; 12-14-2010 at 08:33 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost
