Hi, New memeber here, but I have been lurking around for about a year now
I bought an AT&T 3G iphone in March and waited forever (till the unlock came out) and jailbroke (spirit) and unlocked (ultrasn0w) myself. Now the time has come that I am picking up a new iphone 4 and I want to sell it to cover some of the cost.
I have tried to find the tutorial on iclarified on how to reset, but I can't and also I don't want to screw anything up!!!
I'm in Canada so my best bet is to reset it to original then rejailbreak and unlock, but I know things may have changed since I bought the phone etc..
It is running on 3.1.3 bootloader 5.12.xx and I WANT to keep it on that.
So, what is the best way to go about this???
Thanks so much in advance.
You're on 3.1.3 so you are fine. Simply restore in iTunes (make sure you have 3.1.3 downloaded and point iTunes to that) then rejailbreak and unlock. It won't force a restore to a higher firmware as that wasn't around yet for 3.1.3.
Ok I don't know what to do next - i am an idiot, sorry!
I retored it directly from the phone then it got stuck on the apple logo with the spinning wheel...so I downloaded the file "iphone1,2_3.1.3_7E18Restore.ipsw" unzipped it, and when I hit shift/restore in itunes it comes up but I select the file then it goes through what files are inside...so I end up at DFU I think that's the one I want but it says eventually "no files match that folder". I've tried deleting the file and redownloading it but it's the same. I am on windows vita.
Please help someone wants to pick up the phone today!
When I try to restore my 3Gs 3.1.3 using itunes I get the error (the iphone could not be restored, an unknown error occurred (3004). How is it he could use itunes to restore? I thought apple was not signing 3.1.3 anymore?
first of all it's "she" not "he"...read the whole thread...
you can get the link to download the custom firmware on iclarified -google "where to download firmware files from" and you should find it. Pick which firmware you want download it (use firefox!) and have it saved to your desktop.
Nowthat you have downloaded your ipsw(firmware) file first turn of your phone using a hard reset - hold both home and sleep till it turns off. Open itunes on your computer and then hold the home button on your phone down for a few sec.
While holding down the home button plug it into your computer - let go when your phone shows the "connect to itunes logo".
Wait about 30 sec then itunes will find your phone and say it has found a phone in recovery mode and you need to restore it.
When you hit restore hold down your shift key and enter at the same time. This will pop up a window prompting you to find the file you want to use. Click on the file you need now and then it will do it in itunes automatically without updating to the new firmware! Your phone will be as good as (factory) new. If you want it JB you will have to redo that.
Good luck, HTH.
Sorry about the mistake. Thank you for the tip I will try that, I thought that Apple was not signing off on 3.1.3 anymore, it told me that an error had occurred, but I was not in recovery mode I just tried to do an update using shift + restore and pointing to the 3.1.3 firmware.
Correct, Apple is not signing for 3.1.3 anymore. But for the iPhone 3G and below, it doesn't matter for iOS 3.x and below. iTunes will restore it no matter what. With the iPhone 3GS and above, the hardware itself requires Apple's approval, so you need the appropriate SHSH file period. With the 3G on iOS 4.x and above, there's a software bit that requires Apple's approval, and so the SHSH blobs matter there, but even then you can do it without the SHSH file if you use something other than iTunes to restore (redsn0w etc) since it's not actually built into the hardware.
I've been corrected in another thread, and so I'm not entirely sure how to restore a 3G to 4.x or above without the appropriate SHSH files. All I know then is that without the SHSH files you can freely restore to 3.x or below, and with them you can restore to 4.x and above.
