SHSH and backups

I dont fully understand how the shsh files work, and what they are really for. In cydia it shows that they have several on file for me, even tho I have only had 3.0 and 4.10 installed on my phone. This being the case, do I still need to save my shsh again with tiny umbrella? Also, in Itunes, when it does a backup, is there a way I can save these backups to my computer in case something happens to my Itunes or for whatever reason? Im still learning so please accept my apologies if these have been answered before. Thanks!

Those back ups are already saved to itunes you need to save your blobs each firmware to insure a jailbreak/ unlock
