Lost all my messages

my jailbroken 3g iPhone on ios4.1 crashed whilst i was texting.

The springboard needed to restart, as it had crashed i restarted and now i have lost all of my texts.

How do i get these back? I need these texts back to my phone.

I know i can run a restore from my computer from a previous back up, but is there another way?

I'm so frustrated right now, i have switched phone off and on and done a soft reset. nothing.

Doing a restore is the only way that i know of.

A bit of research shows that you can extract sms from a backup file, is there any free softwares that do this?
