iOS 4.2 iPhone 4 1013 error

I decided to upgrade my wife's iPhone 4 to 4.2 tonight. Halfway through it bombed out and said must restore. I'd backed up so no biggie, but everytime I get half way through restore I get 1013 error. I tried putting in dfu mode (the iPhone screen was black the entire time) and still 1013 error. Oh, this is an iPhone 4 that has never been jailbroken for what its worth.

anyone have an idea??

you edited your hosts file at some point.. probably a baseband error just kick it out of recovery with tiny umbrella after you get that error

Having encountered that iTunes error ... your baseband is now (or will be shorly) unlockable to ANY carrier.

You will be very happy when it's time to sell it later

Unlockable == higher resale value!

i'm having the same problem here, exactly the same. Tried to update to 4.2, and couldn't, and now it won't restore. Error 1013....

Not sure what Mes is talking about. This was a never jailbroken iPhone 4 on 4.1 02.14.00 that now is 03.10.01
This can't be unlocked and may never be able to be unlocked. Not big deal for me though. Agree on resale value, but I just saying I don't think you understood the situation.

But while I have the attention of someone smarter than me. I'm embarrassed to ask but how do you setup 2 profiles in iTunes. So when I sync my wife's iPhone transfers her contacts, movies and apps and not mine and hers??

Kick it out of recovery mode with TinyUmbrella (from thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com) after getting error 1013. It should be fine after and successfully on 4.2.

hmm idk man ive backed up 3 iphones on mine and when i restore from backup it always puts the certain individuals stuff on it not everyone elses so idk buddy to be honest..

Because of the iTunes error, I incorrectly 'assumed' you used Tiny Umbrella before the update to 4.2 and preserved the older 4.1 baseband. Too late now

Hey guys,
the kicking doesn't work for me either.
But I have to add, that my iPhone was jailbroken using limera1n on IOS 4.1.

I decided that I didn't want the jailbreak anymore because I barely use it. I read somewhere that only by restoring it the jailbreak would be undone. Unfortunately I obvisouly had a bad timing, while restoring iTunes also updated to IOS 4.2 which probably mesed the whole thing up.
Now I get the error 1013 after trying to restore it.

Can anyone help me please??

I had the same problem this morning. After going through these steps the update was succesfully.

Find the solution here:

Apple - Support - Discussions - Upgrade to iOS 4.2 1013 error ...

1. Go to your "Applications" folder
2. Go to your "Utilities" folder
3. Launch "Terminal"
4. Type "sudo nano /etc/hosts" (without quotes) and hit return
5. Enter your password
6. Use the down arrow key to find the "gs.apple.com" entries. Once the cursor is in front, make sure you comment out the line(s) by entering "#" (no quotes) in front of the text
7. Save the file by pressing CONTROL+O on the keyboard
8. Exit the nano editor by pressing CONTROL+X on the keyboard
9. Restore your iDevice

I am having the same problem, I don't know where to put the # and if I should just delete the line instead.. It is not saving either when I make edits and hit CONTROL+O to save
