Is using Edge (E) the same thing as 3G?
Im currently using my iPhone4 and I have a data plan with Fido (in Canada). But everytime I turn on 3G, my bars drops to about 2 or 3, but when I turn it off it goes max and the E appears. If I click on Facebook or Safari (something that uses internet) on E, will it be the same as 3G? Or will it cost me something outside of the data plan I already have monthly?
Basically, will it cost me money if I use the Edge (E)?

It does not cost you any more. You just won't get as fast of speeds. 3G covereage is not as far spread as Edge so that is why your edge signal is better. When it switches to say roam then it will cost you more.

Correct; it will not cost you anything extra.
It is just the slower part of your data connection but is still part of a data connection.

3G is almost always better then edge unless it's 1bar of 3G and 5bars of edge
Yea post carrier require more money for 3G Speed since it has a faster data transfer rate then Edge
In the end you get Internet with both just 3G will bring it faster
The same thing is true about Internet cables like Cat 5 vs Cat 7, they both transfer Internet but Cat 7 allows for about 100x more transfer at once therefor it's faster
If this helped or gave you info you didn't know please thank me on site else keep talking

One of the best benefits of using Edge instead of 3G is that your battery will last a lot longer. The only time I use 3G is when I am updating my Apps on the phone. Otherwise I am using Edge. Edge in my neck of the woods is very fast so it is not really too painful.

Agreed with CaptainChaos, I don't really use 3G due to it draining the battery like no tomorrow. And also I find it my edge is faster then my 3G most of the times.

Doesn't it automatically switch to edge when it cannot connect to 3g?

Yes, it does switch automatically. I don't find the speed increase worth the extra battery drain though so I usually have the 3G turned off.
