Default Can I restore without upgrading?

If for some reason I have to restore my phone does it automatically update the firmware? Reason I ask is it's an ip4 and if it up updates I'm buggered lol. This is my first iPhone so I'm not sure exactly what happens when you restore hence the question! If it does is there a way of preventing it? If not happy days!

As far as I know, no. iTunes connects to Apple to verify your firmware, and the only one Apple says yes to right now, is 4.1.

I believe if you saved your SHSH you can use TinyUmbrella to start a TSS server to trick iTunes and downgrade.

Yes you would have needed to have saved your SHSH for your current firmware when Apple was still signing it to be able to restore without updating.

You can prevent iTunes from updating your phone by updating to the latest firmware

You can preserve your baseband with TinyUmbrella's TSS server running during your upgrade. I'd use the shift+restore to a stock 4.1 ipsw just to be safe.

Otherwise, keep watch of your phone when plugged into iPhone

It's the baseband I want to preserve. I'm in no great rush to upgrade to be honest was just checking my options worst case scenario. But tiny umbrella will preserve it right? Ip4 4.0.1 01.59.00 I can't afford to get it wrong cos it's the only phone I have lol

Yes it will. Here is a tutorial if you want to give it a go: iPhone 4.1 Upgrade: Retain Original Baseband Unlock [Tutorial] | The Apple Press

Just did it on two iP4's, I shift+restored to 4.1 with the TSS server running, so yes, it works

Just not sure if you have to save the SHSHs first tho, cuz I saved them first for 4.1 before doing it.

Yes you need to save the 4.1 SHSH first.

I have an iPhone 4 on 4.0.2, same baseband as you, and I have held off on upgrading to 4.1. The advantages over what I have now, don't make it worth the time and risk for me. I'm afraid I will make my quite expensive iP4 into a quite expensive iPod touch, Lol.

Ya if you aren't big on gamecenter or hdr photos then 4.1 isnt that appealing. You do have to go to 4.1 if you want to facetime to ipod touch 4G or to a Mac though.
