Yes it works if you upgraded to iOS 4.1 without upgrade your baseband, if your baseband still 01.59.00 yes you can use ultrasn0w to unlock. If you upgraded your baseband in some way to 2.10.04 ultrasn0w are not going to work, at least for now.

Cool it's just for my friend but I have been looking for custom firmware for my 3GS to keep my baseband so I can upgrade to 4.1 but have found nothing...
