Can you restore a 3.0.1 backup to Iphone4?

ALright my father wants to use his backup of his 3.0.1 Iphone 3G and put it on his 4. We spent all of last night trying to figure something out.... The only conclusion was to update the iphone to 4.1..... I SAID NO WAY (makes my life hell cuz it's my phone now) so anyways. We synced it to his New Imac. Now it backed everything up (took overnight to back up!???) anyways now please tell me if it's possible to load that backup to the new Iphone and if so WHAT"S THE PROCEDURE. After extensive searching... I can't seem to find any info about this type of procedure everyone just assumes you're on the latest version or something.

NVM We did it... and what do you mean backup? My father needed some important info from his phone and stuff.... anyways he restored it just fine so awesome for me.
