iphone 3gs Problems!! Please HELP

i have a iphone 3gs (early model) just restored to 4.0.1 and now it reads iphoen on top left where the carrier usually is and now it will not detect a sim card being in the iphone any help would be greatly appreciated

check to make sure there is no water damage. shine a bright flashlight at the bottom where the USB cable plugs in and hold at an angle to see if you a pink dot.
