iTunes activation server issues...
Hi guys.
So last night I backed up my iPhone 4 SHSH blobs using TinyUmbrella.
I then downloaded 4.0.1 from iTunes, however the software will not install and I keep getting a 'Software Activation Server cannot be contacted' error.
Anybody else having this problem?
I know the update does not really do much, but its worrying me why I can't have it anyway!
Thanks all
gav

Sounds like there is an entry in your hosts file for gs.apple.com if so comment this out.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
I'm fairly new to this so a bit more detail would be great.
I had the same problem trying to update my iPad too!
Cheers

Open your host file with notepad (assuming your running windows) start -> run -> %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts -> ok. Are there any lines that contain gs.apple.com? If so remove that line and save the file.

I'm guessing he has no such entry and it's just Apple's servers being overloaded or a problem with his internet connection.
But I could be wrong. He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.

Yep, the gs.apple line was in the host file.
Removed, saved and updated to 4.0.1.
Kudos to liv3wire,

Just out of interest, where had you pointed it too?
If you had pointed it to the right place you shouldn't have got that error. He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.

Hi Gav
I had exactly the same issue using firmware umbrella and using the guidance given by Liv3wire and was able to fix it, very happy indeed to at last find out what the issue was even if I'm not sure what caused it at least its working againEric's iPhone 4 4.01 offically unlocked
