Default Annoying message alert icon in status bar

Everytime I receive an sms or mms, i have a small red icon pop up on my status bar. It remains even after I read the message in BiteSMS and often is visible even if I am in other apps. When I push it, it will pop open a red window that shows who sent me messages and when. I can press clear there and it will all go away. Is there any way that this can be turned off altogether?

    I have a 32gb 3gs running 3.1.3 jb'd with Spirit.

    Thanks
    JT

I'm not too sure about Bitesms but with iRealsms there were settings for which application you wanted to be your default and what sort of notifications you could get. Might try diggin around in the Bitesms app or under the settings app then Bitesms.
Have they released the jailbreak in the app store yet?

Thanks for the info everyone. I have disabled all notifications for bitesms, and I am still getting the same icon coming up when I receive messages. As far as statusnotifier, I don't believe I have that. I didn't see it in my list of installed packages in cydia.

I'm thinking I may need to just start removing my apps I got from cydia one at a time until it quits doing it, then I'll know what the culprit was.
