iphone 4 led flash?

2 of my friends got the new iphone and we were at a dark bar last night and tried to use the led flash, all we ended up with is just a glob of white in the picture.

has anyone successfully used the built in flash?

I had the same problem but I took off the plastic in the back and it worked fine.
