ok guys so now im in front of my friends mac...i have
Itunes 9.2 latest
PwnageTool 4.0 for MAC
official iphone iOS 4 firmware
i cooked the firmware with pwnagetool i said 'no' at the 2nd question in pwnagetool because i would like to unlock (baseband 05.12 or w/e is on here) so now i have the custom firmware
i hook up the 3gs to the comp the phone syncs .. than i press left alt button and clicked restore to select the custom firmware..
and i get error 1604
... i was on redmond pie right now and i read someone put something like this " If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS with the OLD BOOTROM and you DID NOT use Spirit to jailbreak then you can create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore with your jailbroken recovery mode "
i did use spirit when i tried to jailbreak and unlock this phone for the first time a couple of days ago...and it was successful but my dumb *** tried using blacksn0w after to unlock instead of ultra sn0w and than the phone stopped booting correctly (white circle of death thru the apple logo ) .. so i finally restored to i OS4 yesterday and now im over here trying to do this...anyone please?????
update i tried restoring in DFU mode as well got error 1600..
i dont understand how if using spirit once you totally killed your chances to jailbreaking again man....Fcukin Phones!!!! aaaaahh...
so right now im restoring 1nce again to the iOS 4 firmware....please someone help mee

Two important questions:
Do you have your 3.1.2 SHSH blobs on file?
Do you have the "old" bootrom?
You need to downgrade to 3.1.2 first, then jailbreak with SOMETHING OTHER THAN SPIRIT (blackra1n is fine). Then attempt to restore to your pwnd 4.0 ipsw.
If you can't answer yes to both questions above, then you're out of luck until the next exploit is released (probably not too long from now)

now just wait a minute or so and now you'll notice it just stays on the preparing iphone for recovering thing... what you have to do is hold down power and home... now you'll have a white screen, now release the two buttons and re-hold them down. Now you're device will go black and an apple logo will pop-up. Then a progress bar on your iphone will pop-up and it will start restoring to 3.1.2...
I get no white screen, it simply goes to extracting then verifying which of course it cannot. I am running 3.0. any thoughts would be greatly appreciated an oh yeah...bit of a noob...

How confusing je, since I'm new to the iPhone thing my head is spinning in crazy computer phrases and diminutives like shsh blobs, .ispw, and all the different ways that exist to jailbreak and unlock an iPhone. To the moment I've kinda understand everything except for the shsh blobs they sound to be something like saved firmwares so before you jailbreak you can go back to that os state you were before? Just wanna make sure I'm in the right path.

It really is easy to be overwhelmed with all the information (and misinformation) pertaining to the jailbreak community!
To answer your question regarding SHSH blobs: basically, when Apple released the iPhone 3GS they incorporated a hardware-based system that insures users can only install the most current release of iOS. The way the system operates is each time you attempt to apply an iOS restore to your iPhone, iTunes examines the serial number of your phone and the version of iOS you are attempting to install. iTunes then sends this information to Apple to verify its OK to proceed with the installation. If all is well, Apple responds with a unique signature (the SHSH blob) and iTunes proceeds with the installation. If Apple decides you're trying to install an unapproved iOS, it will not return an SHSH blob and iTunes will abort.
If you want to retain your ability to downgrade to unsupported versions of iOS, you can store your unique SHSH blobs on saurik's Cydia server or use a local utility to generate the blob to be saved for future use. If you don't have a copy of the blob cached, you will never be able to downgrade your device and will only be able to use currently approved version of iOS.
Bear in mind this is a very "layman's" explanation but if you are curious there is extensive information available about this process if you search around for it.

hi!
stuck on recovery screen. before i did that, i used tinyumbrella to store SHSH files from 3.1.2 on a 3gs. my question is does it take a certain amount of time before i can restore using the blobs? i'm getting 3194 error in itunes and my host files are edited to contact sauriks server. also there is an umbrella host file there as well. Thanks

Yes, you can use the stored SHSH to downgrade. The easiest way is to use the firmware umbrella tool.
The program is pretty self-explanatory once you load it. Just be sure to drag-and-drop your stored SHSH file onto the program window. This will cache the file and you'll then be able to set up the program to do a local restore. I'm not sure if this sounds complicated, but it's really not once you have the program in hand. There's also a readme file in case you're stuck.
You can find the firmware umbrella on the maker's site here: The Firmware Umbrella
You would have needed to store the SHSH while 3.1.2 was still being signed. Apple stopped signing that in February. 3.1.3 stopped being signed June ~21'ish.We're all just toymakers in the game of life.

Just have the umbrella windows open, then find the SHSH file in explorer. Click and hold the file with the mouse and then drag it over the umbrella window and release the mouse button. It doesn't matter that you saved the file with another tool.
For errors like that, you should try the maker's site. You can ask in the comments section.

Hi i had the same problem with my iphone 4 on a windows cpu all you need to do is: Go to right click notebook click run as admin click open and deleat everything in the url place and type this in "C
Windows\System32\drivers\etc" no quotations then select all files and click hosts. Scroll all the way down and you should find some numbers and then gs.apple.com and deleat that line and then save it you should be able to continue the restore.
