I'm trying to figure this one out too . . . for the iPad launch, I was fine getting to the reserved line an hour before opening, but this is going to be a whooooole different animal . . .
I might do 3 or 4 am too. If there were only one store in my area, I'd go earlier. If I didn't have a reservation, I'd be on my way right now . . .

Be there at midnight. Just buy a nice sleeping bag and it will go by quickly

Think of all the factors going into this:
- biggest hardware update since iPhone first released
- iPhone's surging in popularity
- was extremely difficult to order one online
- insane amount of early upgrades dished out from AT&T
. . . That's a formula for CRAAAAAAAZINESS.

No need if u reserved it
1. There will be 2 lines this year. A reservation line and a non reservation line.
2. There is a 97% chance you WILL get your phone on iDay 2010. The reason it doesnt GUARANTEE is if there is some sort of natural disaster or if the FedEx truck wrecks enroute with the phones or etc etc.
3. The second line is for people that do NOT reserve, and they are first come first serve.
4. They will have your phone until the end of the business day
This comin directly from the mouth of store management

They have to be first for the same reason the first poster of a thread always says: "First" j/k
I havn't camped out yet, but was thinking about it this year.
I can understand you do not want to miss out and might not get one until for a few days or weeks in this case.
Call Us Crazy, I have been very early for things before.
I would even sleep in line too, But the question is... What about when I have to go to the bathroom after waiting in line for a few hours.. Do I lose my place? probably. I thought I read about a guy a year or two with a bottle taped to his leg under his pants
I'll be getting mine via delivery, because I have to work at night and dont want to miss him, I miay either meet him at one of his first stops on his route or try to have them hold it at the UPS/FEDEX warehouse and I will pick it right away.Something Hidden in iPhone 4---Steve Jobs twitter
