I have a water damaged 16gb 3GS (verified at my local Apple Store today)..
During boot up, I see a dark screen Apple logo and then the dark screen iTunes and cord.
Same thing if I try to put it in DFU mode.
When hooking it up to my laptop, I get a message saying the USB device is damaged, etc.
Took it to the local Apple Store today. The rep looked the water dots and offered to replace the phone at a cost of $199.
I'm thinking about making the exchange/purchase but I don't know if I'll be able to unlock or jailbrake the replacement phone.
Does anyone know what version operating system Apple installs on their replacement or "refurbished" 3GS phones 3.1.3 or 3.1.2? If I do purchase the replacement phone and it's loaded with an operating system that I can't unlock (3.1.3 etc.), the replacement of no value to me.
Thank for your help.. Ken
Advise would be appreciated..

You will definitely be able to jailbreak it. You won't be able to unlock it since you will almost definitely receive an iPhone with 3.1.3 preinstalled.
