Data Speed Comparison of MyWi, Tethered USB and Bluetooth
To get an idea of speed, I decided to do a comparison of data transfer rates using various methods of connectivity. Here is the info:
I tested three methods of connectivity:
MyWi v3.4.1
Tethered Bluetooth
Tethered USB
Hardware Used:
iPhone 3G, 16GB v3.1.3, Jailbroken with redsn0w 0.9.4, NOT unlocked
iMac 2.16 GHZ, 2.5GB 667MHZ DDR2 SDRAM
Network Area: AT&T 3G network, Athens, GA, Full Signal
Bandwidth Testing Site: speakeasy.net/speedtest, Atlanta, GA server
Each method of connectivity was tested four separate times, results and averages are below. All speeds are in MBPS.
MyWi:
DL / UP
1.40 / .20
2.39 / .34
2.70 / .15
Average:
2.13 / .20
Bluetooth Tethering:
.74 / .31
.81 / .32
.81 / .28
.79 / .30
Average:
.79 / .30
USB Tethering:
1.48 / .33
2.14 / .33
1.65 /.33
1.78 / .33
Average:
1.76 / .33

Good test. Thanks I've been wondering about that.
As a sidenote I'd like to mention/ share my experiences. I have been using PDAnet usb tethered for a few years and I was really happy with it. Then I bought an iPad wifi (I already have access so why pay?).
My setup is a 2g iPhone on tmob with edge access. It's slower but so cheap. When I ran PDAnet in wifi mode the iPhone really heated up. Its using both the cell network and the wifi at the same time so thats somewhat understandable I guess. It would get to a certain temp and it stops charging (thats good- for saftey). Not sure of the temp charging cutoff, but it wasn't uncommon to drive 2.5 hours and it would be nearly dead. Plugged in the whole time by the way. After the 3.0 update this got "better" by the way. I bring this up because I can't tether usb with myfi now and I'm running into it again. My solution is to set it in a phone holder closer to the window, set it more forword, and make sure it gets air. I've even taken it out of its case at times. Like I said its a 2g and I'm not gonna complain too much about making a phone do something it wasn't meant to do anyway. Long story short, if you have heat issues give it air or tether it with usb. That way your only using the cell antenna. Just throwing it out there.
