Is the phone JB? Unlocked? What network is it locked too and what SIM are you trying? He who asks a question looks foolish for 5 minutes. He who doesn't ask a question remains foolish forever.

I am not sure for JB, I bought used and was using it abroad in Pakistan, I think JB means jailbreak, I am not sure about it, it was unlocked as I was using it in Pakistan sim provider is Uphone. I don't know if this help. I can provide more information upon request. It was working fine, but right after the software update through I tunes it gave me this message as stated in my first post. I will appreciate all your help.

If it was unlocked via software and you have upgraded your FW then you can no longer unlock it.

Does this means its useless? do you think I can degrade it to previous FW?
I will appreciate any ideas which will make it work.

Nope but if you are inthat area it should be unlocked any ways. Just pop the sim in and out it grab a sim from a carrier that sells the iphone

Even if you downgrade your iPhone to an earlier firmware it will not do anything to your baseband, which means you still won't be able to unlock your iPhone.
Try popping out your sim and putting it back in. If that doesn't work, then try running the Spirit jailbreak program if you are on firmware 3.1.2 or 3.1.3. Download it from Spirit.
Since you said you recently upgraded your firmware, that must mean you downloaded and installed 3.1.3, so the Spirit jailbreak should work fine.
After you are jailbroken, it will allow you to get past the "no sim" screen. I don't know if your sim will work after that, though.
