    Default iPhone passcode locked

    hey,
I just got an iPhone from a friend and it is locked with a passcode, with 21 million minutes until the next try. I have tried putting it in restore mode to restore it in iTunes (I care not for the data) but iTunes keeps telling me the iPhone is password protected - even when in restore mode, and won't help me. The iPhone does not appear in the device list, nor does it appear in Windows Explorer. Any ideas?
    Thanks

Does iTunes say it was in restore mode or was it on a normal looking screen? Did he forget the password and/or was it Jailbroken?

DFU mode, then restore/jailbreak may be the only way.
