Travelling to Europe with iPhone

I will be travelling on a cruiseship and then going to Italy and would like to know if I will be able to use my iPhone and if so, which way is the best so that I do not incurr outrageous costs.

I think the cruiseship has wifi so that part I think will be okay for checking my emails and data.

Now, while in Italy - what can I do? I have a 3GS iphone and it is not unlocked and tied to Rogers. I don't think there is an unlock for 3.1.2 yet and that is why I have not unlocked it. It is however jailbroken. I suspect that since my iphone is not unlocked I will not be able to just pop in a pay-as-go SIM card - right???

Also what is the best way to handle my data requirements (other than WIFI which I know I can try to get- but sometimes not always available).

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

ther is an unlock for 3.1.2. unlock it. in italy and get a pre paid sim from some carrier over there, also turn off data because it will prob eat your minutes like crazy. have fun you lucky SOB
