3g trouble

Hey guys i just got a new 3g 8gig. My problem is my phone wont ring or alert me of messages. I have the volume all the way up and the speakers work when i play music or even test ringtones but when i get text or call it wont make a noise. Any help?

and i could really use some help on this if any one has some input

This may sound stupid, but is your silent button turned on?

not stupid at all, hmmmm well when i click settings then sound the first option is Silent and under it says vibrate and that was on, i turned it off and had my wife call me and still nothing.

No, the actual silent button, it's above the volume rocker on the left side of the phone.
