My friend has an Iphone that shows an image of a "Gear" and then it says MMI on the boot screen.
And the interface looks extremely funky, not anything that I've seen on an Iphone before. Is this a legit iphone? Can we restore it to the original?

The phone is jailbroken the image you are seeing is a custom boot logo someone added to it. The interface is a theme that has been applied.
Yes you can restore to its original form, but depending on the what model iphone it is specifically a 3gs, when you go to restore it it is going to want to update the firmware to 3.1.3 which if it is a 3gs it will prevent you from jailbreaking it again.
To restore it to new just put in DFU mode and plug it into itunes and follow the prompts to restore as new phone.
Like I said though you might want to make a choice now if it is a 3gs about jailbreaking it again. If it is a 3gs and you do think you will want it jailbroke again then there is info on here on how to do so with out upgrading to 3.1.3 firmware.
