Default Sending MMS causes "No Service"

    Hi gang!

I searched for "no service" but most of what I found is related to the no service after jailbreak.

    I have a iPhone 3GS, running JlBrk 3.1.2.

Normally, I have good 3G and 4 or 5 bars both in the office and at home. But randomly, the phone will go from 3G/5bars, to "Searching" to "No Service" and then it will tell me it "Could Not Activate Cellular Data Network" and "Restore Needed. iPhone cannot make or receive calls. Restore from iTunes."

I can actually MAKE this happen if I try to send a pic MMS from my camera roll. It has done it once just randomly sitting on my kitchen table.

Airplane mode off and on does nothing, neither does 3G off and on. I have reseated the sim card a few times too. If I shut the phone down, leave it down for a few, then restart it comes right back, 3G/5bars! If I restart it right away, it stays in "No Service"

If I turn off 3G, I am able to send pics without this happeneing (so far, I guess I will see how well it keeps working).

Ideas? Suggestions? Anyone else with the same issue?

I do not want to restore from iTunes for obvious reasons (I did not get the phone until after Apple stopped signing 3.1.2, so I have no SHSH on file to go back to 3.1.2). Someone told me to reset network settings, but honestly, I am almost afraid to do that, as it seems a lot of people can't get the phones to boot after doing that. How safe is that to do really?

I actually adore this as a phone, with the exception of this one freaky issue! Help? Please?

Reset network settings. I do this every now and then when my MMS stops sending/receiving consistently.

    Thanks for the reply

That is probably going to be my last resort, if it happens and I can't get it back by restarting.

One of the things I did notice while searching about this issue was a LOT of people hanging at the apple logo when it reboots after resetting the network settings. I wonder why this is?

But if it gets to the point that I can't get my service back by restarting the phone, it's going to be the first thing I do! At that point I will have absolutely nothing to lose!

No idea.. people with AT&T should have absolutely no issues since it downloads the settings over the air. People that are unlocked and have installed custom carrier bundles are probably the ones getting stuck.

Well, after forgetting to turn 3GS off before I sent a picture a whole bunch of times this past weekend, I decided to just take a deep breath, reset the network settings, and hope for the best.

The end result: Well, it got a little further through sending one picture in 3GS before it lost all service. and now it is exactly the same as it was before I reset them.

But thanks for the suggestion! At least I tried! I have no idea what it's issue is (besides annoying).

Do you have ultrasnow installed?...if so this seems to be a common issue after unlocking with ultrasnow.....I have an ip4 and had the same exact issue untill I removed ultrasnow....odd thing is that I also have a 3G and a 3GS that I toy with when new stuff comes out and on both phones had the same issue with ultrasnow...so I removed it from both devices and then re-installed ultrasnow and haven't had any issue on those two devices since.....so I chalk it up to an earlier version of ultrasnow not having all the bugs worked out.

Yes, but it's not what you will be hoping for.

AT&T swore it was the phone. Apple wound up crashing the phone for me in the process of "fixing" it, then insisted I get the Sim card replaced. When that didn't work, they restored the phone to factory, insisting the jailbreak was responsible. When that didn't work, they replaced the phone (I lost my old iboot phone, and got one with the new iBoot, I wasn't happy!), which everyone was sure would fix the problem. It didn't.

Apple swore it was AT&T. And I agreed with them, so I took the issue back to AT&T. Honestly, I have to give their customer service credit here. It did take them a few weeks to figure out what was going on and get it fixed. There was something up with the way the number ported over, and when the phone tried to MMS, it would disconnect from the service (or something of that nature). But, they stayed in touch with me every day until the issue was fixed, and credited my bill accordingly.

So, yes, fixed. Took 6 weeks or so, a million trips to store and two million tech support calls, but fixed and working fine since.
