iPhone 3Gs and PdaNet?
I have the original iPhone, still running software v3.0 (haven't upgraded to 3.1.2), jailbroken.
The most important third-party app I run, bar none, is PdaNet. I tether my MacBook to my iPhone and connect to the Internet on nearly a daily basis.
I live in an EDGE area but frequently travel to 3G service areas. I like some of the features offered on the 3GS and I am eligible for an upgrade, so I'm thinking about biting the bullet and upgrading to a 3GS even though that means I'll have to part with the Mophie JuicePack I got for Christmas for my EDGE iPhone.
Can anyone share stories, good or bad, about PdaNet and the 3GS or the most recent iPhone software, or the jailbreaking process for the newest 3GS phones? It would be much appreciated.

Jailbreaking is so easy nowadays. One click? You can't beat that. I also use pdanet and have never had an issue with it. It works far better for me than mywi.
When you do get your new 3gs, try to find one with the 4th digit in the serial a 3. This would pretty much guarantee that you get the old bootrom and won't have a tethered jailbreak. The 4th and 5th digits of the serial number tell you the week it was manufactured. I wouldn't try any of the corporate ATT stores. I called all the ATT stores in my area and none had the right 3gs.
I ended up calling Walmart and had the clerk go through all his phones and read the serial to me. Turns out they had a bunch of week 37 and 38 phones. I went with a week 37.Last edited by soulthoughts; 01-22-2010 at 10:21 AM.

I haven't kept up with jailbreaking since my last jailbreak (of my 3.0 EDGE iPhone). Has the process changed much, or do you still download software, connect your iPhone to your Mac (in my case) and let the software do its thing?
My concern is that there won't be a jailbreak for whatever firmware is installed on any new iPhone I might get, and I really want (need) PdaNet out of the box.Last edited by hbelkins; 01-28-2010 at 11:05 AM.

Jailbreaking is now easier than ever (connect your phone to your computer and click one button) and all current firmwares can be jailbroken so you won't risk anything by upgrading.
The only problem (which for some is considered quite a big one) is that with the new 3GS, you'll have a tethered jailbreak as soulthoughts talked about.
As for pdanet, I've personally gotten it to work with my 3GS and a windows comp.

Hmmm ... had never heard of a "tethered jailbreak" until now, so I did a little googling. A tethered jailbreak is NOT a good thing.
Does this apply only to "blackra1n" or is "blackra1n" the only jailbreaking software out there now?
I had put off upgrading but guess I'll start checking area Walmarts and seeing what serial number iPhones they have...

Tethered jailbreaks have to do with the new bootrom that is on the newer 3gs phones. This is why you should look at the serial number of the phone before you buy.
Blackrain really has nothing to do iwth whether or not it's tethered. That's all apple's doing.
