What version of Windows are you on? I had alot of issues on Vista with bsod when an iphone was connected or disconnected which was caused i think by usb driver issues, in the end I wiped Vista and put Windows 7 which has had no problems.

Also have you tried different cables to connect the ipod and also different usb ports.
    iPhone 3g 16gb 4.1 redsn0wed
    iPod Touch 32gb 4g iOS
    iPad 2 32gb wifi iOS5
    iPhone 4s 64gb iOS5

OS: Windows 7, OSX Lion: MAFIA WARS 0101 7022 24

A couple of things to try.

Try resetting the iphone by holding down the home button and the power button at the same time until you see the apple logo.

Also, if you have any photos that you have taken with the iphone still on the iphone, email them you yourself then delete them off the iphone.

Once you have emailed them to yourself, delete them off the iphone and connect to computer.
    Worked for me.
