iPhone 3G wont sync or charge from any computer but will charge from wall
New to this forum, so sorry if this isn't the right place to post. I usually read forums and never need to post anything, but I haven't found a similar issue to mine.
Background Info.
iPhone 3G Sw Ver. 3.0.1
Jailbreak and Unlocked with redsn0w 0.8
On T-Mobile
Primary computer
iMac 24" OS X 10.6.2
iTunes Ver 9.0.2
What is the problem?
First I notice a problem, I needed to charge my phone and connected it to a friends PC running Vista. The machine won't even recognize that it was plugged into it.
Then I tried syncing it on my Mac and nothing. Doesn't even act like it's plugged in. I can charge it via a wall charger or car charger with no problem. I've tried it on a friends MacBook, my home PC running XP, my work PC running XP and it's like it's not plugged in. I've tried different cables and nothing. I've tried connecting a different iPhone to my Mac with those two different cables and it worked just fine.
I've tried wiping out iTunes and reinstall and nothing.
I've tried cleaning out the dock connector and nothing.
I've even opened it up to see if I could see anything out of the ordinary and everything looks okay internally.
I've tried restoring it, but I can't get the Mac to see the iPhone, so iTunes won't even attempt to restore it.
Other than this syncing issue the phone works perfect. EDGE Data/Wifi/Calls/etc all working as usually.
I'm afraid I have a hardware issue related to the dock connector where the charge lines are working fine, but the data lines are faulted. Just today I reseated the Number 4 connector inside the phone to make sure something there was not an issue. I will likely try cleaning the dock connector with Isopropyl Alcohol tonight to see if that works.
Any suggestion out there?
Thanks in advance for any help!

No, I haven't gotten much help on this one. I did verify that even after a reboot, mine is not charging from the computer either. So my issue may be a little different then yours.
I'll keep searching around.

I've order a new replacement part for the mic / speaker / usb. I'll let you know if replacing it changes anything.

Well after running several months SSH'g apps and such back and forth, I decided to break down and purchase a replacement dock connector. Pulled the phone apart today and got everything back together with no problem. Bad news is that the phone still won't connect. Good news is that things didn't get worse.
Any help out there? Saw another post that recommended deleting all files in ~/Library/Lockdown....No luck with that either.
Not sure if this is a software or hardware issue?
Any luck on your hardware swap?Last edited by NASA_Dan; 02-11-2010 at 08:40 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Yeah I wish it were that easy for me. I've used different cables, different ports, different computers, PCs, Macs...Also, since the problem came up I got an iPhone for my wife and her's connects just fine to our Mac. Thank goodness we have Open_SSH and **********!

Any luck with this problem? I just replaced my dock connector, and I can still neither charge it or connect to a PC. Speaker works fine. What seems a bit odd (and a little encouraging) is that when the phone is off (not just standby), connecting a cable turns it on.
I'm beginning to wonder if the whole logic board needs be replaced.

In my case it seems like a logic board problem. I've try another dock but no luck. Same thing with the touch screen, I've put a new one in and still no sound from the ear-speaker. ( Oh yeah my touchscreen got a ear-speaker issue.)
The only thing I can recall being broke in the phone is the small lock mechanism on connector cable 3. Does anybody with the same problem have the lock connector # 3 damage ?

I have exactly the same problem - mac won't recognise my Jailbroken iPhone 3GS. It worked fine for a couple of months after I jailbroke it, but all of a sudden it just won't sync or anything. If my phone is dead, then it will charge it from the comp, until it turns on, but then as soon as its turned on, it doesn't do anything.
Have you managed to figure this one out? I've searched everywhere for a solution but can't seem to find one anywhere :S

Same here
I have the same problem, I have a 3gs 16gb when is off it only charges and computer doesn't recognize it and it doesn't charge when is on, also replaced the dock flex cable and no difference, i was wondering if it is a software issue, what if i do a complete reset thru the phone, has anyone tried this?

No new updates here....Only thing that has changed for me is that my speaker is pretty flaky. I can't really seem to press on the phone anywhere to make it better or worse so I'm not sure. I'm beginning to believe it's a software issue, but I have no idea where to start with that one.
