How to downgrade OS not Baseband???

I have an iPhone 2G with OS 3.1.2 and Baseband 4.5.4 I want to downgrade the os to 2.1 so I can unlock the phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just downgrade, it won't effect the baseband.

I tried using custom firmware and got an error message, so I tried using iH8Sn0w and I could not get the program to work. I feel like I am missing something simple and obvious.

Just an odd question but can't you use any of the current forms to unlock?

Not that I am aware of. The baseband is for that of a 2.1 iphone and the OS is 3.1.2. To my knowledge no 3.1.2 unlocker provides support for such an aniquated baseband.

So the baseband is not updated when you go to 3.1.2 official?

It is updated when you update an activated phone, but this phone can't be activated. I need to unlock it.

Still, anyone, HOW can I downgrade my OS... I have tried using custom 2.2.1 firmware but get an error
message... This should be simple, how can I downgrade my
OS?!?!?!

Have you tried a custom firmware of the 3.1.2?

I am sure i'd be able to but doubt that would do me any good. I need to downgrade...

If the current versions are unlockable and hactivatable then why not be on current versions?

I finally got it I downgraded to 3.0 and used redsn0w... It worked like a charm.
