So I've tried jailbreaking my iPhone 3gs, blackea1n works great, I can get cydia on there fine. The problem Is when I try installing backgrounder and winterboard, when the phone restarts I get the phone restarted I get the iTunes sync thing and have to restore.. What's the deal?
Sounds like you have a new iPhone 3GS with the upgraded bootrom which requires a tethered jailbreak. This means every time the phone is rebooted you have to run blackra1n AGAIN to boot the phone out of recovery mode. There is absolutely no way around this.
Ah.... I saw the tethered thing but I didn't know what it ment. So when I install something, at what point do i run blackra1n?when I see the iTunes icon? Will this keep me from having to do a restore?
There are only a couple apps that require a reboot... winterboard and swirlymms are the only ones i can think of. Many apps require restarting the springboard which doesn't turn the phone off. Running blackra1n again will kick the phone out of recovery mode and you won't have to restore. Once you get your phone all set up there should be no need at all to reboot it.
How long ago did you get your iPhone? You can try to get one from week 39 or earlier from Best Buy or AT&T. Apple will probably not be quite helpful with this.
I needed my 3G[S] to have the older bootrom, so I actually called Best Buy and told them that I need the 3rd, 4th and 5th numbers in the serial number to be 939 or less (i.e., safe way to tell before purchasing if you definitely have the older bootrom). They sifted through their stock and found one. They didn't care.
