New iPhone owner with a serious question

Ok so i bought me an iPhone yesterday, I got the 3GS iPhone and i have been wanting to change my skin/theme REALLY badly, I found this site and it seems REALLY awesome, but I still yet am not 100% sure on how to do this, i have read about jailbreaking and all that stuff, But i cant find a guide that tells me how to change themes and do other cool mods without unlocking my iPhone, I dont need it unlocked because im stayin with AT&T. So can someone tell me how or point me to the guide to mod my iPhone themes and do other cool stuff without having my phone unlocked or is it possible and also i dont want to lose my wifi, and my firmware is 3.1.2

I have messed around with modding all kinds of phones from razrs to htc's and i just wanna change my themes and other cool things without unlocking my phone or bricking it, Its to nice/expensive to screw it up.

What would i be looking for in my phone to change the theme with out taking it off at&t for my 3GS

To even be able to use Winterboard, you'll have to jailbreak your phone. If you go up to our guide tab and click on the correct one, it will lead you step by step to a successful jailbreak...

Sorry dude u can't. Since u got a new one ur jailbreak will be gone if u reboot and if u install winterboard u have to reboot foe it to work

You will need to jailbreak your phone to theme it, as stated. It is not the same as unlocking if that was unclear.

After jailbreaking, if you haven't yet, you still have the option to replace/mod files on your phone to get your desired look (assuming winterboard will not work). If you do so, remember to back up any files you change. The guide i posted will help somewhat, though it is designed for winterboard.

Ok so if I jail break my phone it won't unlock it and if I turn it off then on again it will be ok?

Ya got some researching to do my man.
Jailbreak will not unlock your phone.
To jailbreak the newer 3GS' a new exploit is used, and it is now only a tethered jailbreak--> every time you reboot your device, you must plug it into a computer and run the jailbreak software(blackra1n) for it to boot up.

Edit: You'll find most of what you need to know on this very site....heartwarming, isn't it??

Ok, so basicly ill be screwed if my phone dies while im out and about, and i get to my car to charge it and it wont turn on?
